WAO: AFRO FESTIVAL LIKE NO OTHER UNITES PEOPLE BEYOND HERITAGE AND CULTURE

It was a memorable experience at the just concluded AFROFEST, the largest free African Music Festival in North America.

The talk of the town fiesta to remember was organized by We Are One NB Inc (WAO); a non-profit organization whose goal is to promote multiculturalism in New Brunswick, especially in the Greater Moncton area.

Through their programming over the years, AFROFEST has become one of the most important African cultural events in Canada as they present numerous multinational artists and initiatives which aim at showcasing the diverse and beautiful nature of various cultures in Africa.

More so, with this in mind, WAO organizes the We Are One AFRO Festival which is an Afro multicultural festival that is open to all cultures, religions, ethnicities etc. It aims to promote intercultural understanding, participate in discussions on multiculturalism and break down current cultural barriers.

The organizers saw that the umbrella of culture from elsewhere is expanding more and more in the Atlantic region, which makes terms for such as inclusion, cultural diversity, equity and multiculturalism relevant for a desired progress to make the people value and appreciate themselves like never before.

Findings revealed that We Are One NB Inc (WAO) wants to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves and flourish in their culture and at the same time give the opportunity to local communities to learn more about other cultures and actively participate in the integration and the inclusion of everyone.

The two days event started on August 25, 2022 with various Workshops inviting people from different Afro communities to deliver activities like – cooking, dancing, children’s reading and painting workshops.

It was a great opportunity to shine light on the talents of the people who call New Brunswick their home. Afro professionals from New Brunswick and elsewhere in Canada were also invited to come and deliver conferences on current topics such as Systemic Racism and the contribution of Afro communities to the economy of New Brunswick and the great region of the south-east.

To round up the grand celebration, on August 26, 2022 a superlative outdoor show was organized to thrill the participants from different walks of life with a loud musical entertainment by the local and national Afro artists such as DJ Mobaws, Kamoli and Admiral.

For more vibes that radiate inclusion and diversity, the participants were also given the opportunity to see the master performances by First Nations and Acadian artists from New Brunswick such as Christine Melanson and Alexis Belliveau.
