In 1997, Dr. Sweeney-Nixon joined the vibrant tapestry of UPEI’s biology department. Her leadership soon blossomed, as she took the helm as chair from 2012 to 2019. During this time, she became the architect of the department’s strategic vision, a blueprint that paved the way for groundbreaking programs in biotechnology and paramedicine. Her unwavering commitment to quality ensured the department successfully navigated a rigorous seven-year review of its academic offerings. In recognition of her exceptional teaching prowess, Dr. Sweeney-Nixon was bestowed with the illustrious UPEI Hessian Merit Award in 2011.
From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Sweeney-Nixon’s reputation as a preeminent researcher was further solidified as she held the prestigious Jeanne and J.-Louis Lévesque Research Professorship in NutriSciences and Health. Her research delves into the complexities of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, exploring the potential of berry-derived antioxidants and unraveling the mysteries of diabetes. Her prolific career has yielded over 50 scholarly publications and garnered over $1.8 million in research funding, a testament to her dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge.
Dr. Sweeney-Nixon’s influence extends far beyond her own research endeavors. She has been a beacon of guidance for eight Master of Science students, a post-doctoral fellow, and six research assistants, nurturing their academic journeys. Her expertise has also graced numerous MSc and PhD supervisory and examination committees, solidifying her commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence.
In January 2023, Dr. Sweeney-Nixon embarked on a new chapter, assuming the mantle of associate vice-president research and dean of graduate studies at UPEI. This well-deserved appointment. Dr. Sweeney-Nixon’s leadership in shaping the future of research and graduate studies at the UPEL university
