Born in the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Binsai’s earliest memories were painted in shades of hardship. Poverty was a constant companion, even the simple luxury of light seemed a distant dream. Yet, amidst the limitations, a spark of resilience flickered within her.
Fate intervened at the tender age of five when a twist of circumstance brought her to a new life in Botswana. Adopted by her half-sister and a Kenyan ambassador, Binsai received access to the critical healthcare she desperately needed. This pivotal moment marked the start of a remarkable transformation.
Kenya became her canvas. Here, she embraced the experiences that shaped her. Gratitude bloomed in her heart, a profound appreciation for the extraordinary opportunity that lifted her from the clutches of poverty. However, life wasn’t without its shadows. The loss of her parents cast a deep personal void. Yet, even in grief, Binsai found solace in the act of caring. Witnessing her mother’s battle with cancer, she discovered the transformative power of makeup. A touch of color, a brushstroke of confidence – these small acts brought a flicker of joy amidst the struggle.
This experience ignited a passion within her – a desire to empower others through the art of makeup. Her Instagram page, “Vieva Couture,” became a testament to her talent, showcasing the artistry that blossomed from a place of empathy. But Binsai’s ambitions soared beyond the world of cosmetics.
Africa’s vibrant tapestry held a special place in her heart. She envisioned a clothing line, “Viva La Vie,” that would echo the continent’s unique voice. Each piece, meticulously crafted or ethically sourced from Kenyan vendors, whispered tales of cultural heritage. Her aim wasn’t just about fashion; it was about dismantling the barriers of cultural appropriation, ensuring that the rich essence of Africa was acknowledged and celebrated.
Binsai’s voice wasn’t confined to the realm of fashion and beauty. A champion for justice, she had always been a vocal advocate for the marginalized. she stood up for those facing mistreatment, her unwavering spirit a beacon of hope.
St. Thomas University provided the platform to further refine her pursuit of social change. Choosing a path in politics and human rights, Binsai used her voice to raise awareness about the exploitation plaguing children in Congolese mines. The fight for Black Lives Matter resonated deeply, and she actively participated in the movement.
As the African ambassador for the STU International Students Association, Binsai championed the cause of sexual assault survivors and international students burdened by exorbitant tuition fees. Currently, her internship at the Madhu Verma Migrant Justice Centre allows her to advocate for the rights of migrant workers, urging Canada to adopt the UN convention that safeguards their well-being. Binsai’s journey is a testament to the unwavering human spirit. From the depths of hardship, she emerged with a burning desire to make a difference. Though her ultimate purpose remains undefined, the path ahead is clear – a relentless pursuit of a world where beauty thrives alongside justice, and the voices of the marginalized are amplified.
