From Newcomer to Changemaker: A Story of Resilience and Empowerment – Doyin Somorin

In 2016, I embarked on a journey that would change my life. Leaving my home country Nigeria, I landed in Canada as an international student, eager to pursue an MBA at the University of New Brunswick. This wasn’t just about gaining knowledge; it was the start of a remarkable quest to empower newcomers and international students like me.

My story is one of resilience, community, and illuminating the potential of others. Completing my MBA wasn’t just a personal milestone, it was a stepping stone to giving back to the community that shaped me. UNB provided the fertile ground for me to blossom, equipping me with the skills to navigate the Canadian workplace. Here, I learned from brilliant minds, forged lifelong friendships, and built meaningful connections.

Today, I’m a seasoned professional in immigration, community development, and newcomer integration. But more than titles, I see myself as a leader and changemaker, driven by a mission to equip newcomers with the tools they need to not only integrate but also to thrive.

My journey is woven with experiences that highlight resilience, empathy, and a deep belief in the transformative power of empowering others. Witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by newcomers ignited a passion within me to create positive change. I am dedicated to providing a supportive framework for those navigating the complexities of adapting to their new home.

My commitment stems from a fundamental belief: building bridges and fostering a sense of belonging is crucial. Having walked the path myself, I understand the challenges, the anxieties, the yearning to connect. My goal is to equip them with the tools they need to integrate seamlessly, find meaningful work, build connections, and navigate their new lives with confidence.

My involvement goes beyond words. I actively participate in strategic initiatives addressing the unique needs of newcomers and international students. Through mentorship, connections, integration programs, and networking events, I strive to create an environment where newcomers not only survive but flourish.

Working with Ignite, a dynamic organization dedicated to positive change, has amplified my impact. As the Manager of Integration and Retention, I play a pivotal role in shaping strategies that enhance the newcomer experience. I’ve developed and implemented innovative programs that go beyond the conventional, equipping them with the tools they need to seamlessly integrate into Canadian society. This role isn’t just about a job; it’s a calling to create a more inclusive and supportive community, fostering connection, facilitating opportunities, and guiding individuals as they navigate their new home.

As Jack Welch eloquently states, “If there were anything I would like to be remembered for, it is that I helped people understand that leadership is helping other people grow and succeed.” My journey embodies this sentiment. I am deeply grateful for the connections I’ve made and the opportunity to contribute to building a stronger, more inclusive community.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I acknowledge the countless Black women changemakers in Atlantic Canada, pushing boundaries and creating a more equitable future. My story is a testament to the strength and resilience that resides within us, and I am driven by the vision of a community where everyone feels empowered to reach their full potential.
