Canada-based journalist Adewale Ajayi named among global sports professionals as Nigeria expands search for diaspora talent.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has inaugurated a high-level Diaspora Talent Discovery Committee, bringing together an accomplished group of Nigerian sports professionals, administrators, journalists, and stakeholders from across the world to strengthen talent identification and engagement beyond the nation’s borders.

Among the notable names announced is Canada-based journalist Adewale Ajayi, whose appointment has drawn attention as a strong signal of the Commission’s intention to combine sports development with international media reach, diaspora influence, and strategic visibility.

Ajayi’s inclusion places him among a respected team of global Nigerian figures expected to help identify, connect, and integrate talented athletes of Nigerian heritage into the country’s sports system.

“Adewale Ajayi’s appointment highlights the growing importance of diaspora voices in shaping the future of Nigerian sports.”

The committee is chaired by Dr. Tunde Adelakun, a UK-based sports administrator with previous experience working with both the Nigeria national football team and the Benin national football team. His appointment reflects the NSC’s broader resolve to tap into global expertise as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s sports development framework.

According to the Commission, the Diaspora Talent Discovery Committee is expected to play a central role in expanding Nigeria’s talent pool by identifying promising athletes abroad and creating pathways for their integration into the national sports structure.

For many observers, however, the appointment of Adewale Ajayi is especially significant. As a journalist based in Canada, Ajayi represents more than media presence; he brings access to diaspora communities, cross-border visibility, and the ability to help amplify stories of emerging Nigerian talents who may otherwise remain unnoticed.

In an era where sports growth is increasingly driven by global networks, representation, and storytelling, Ajayi’s role is widely seen as both strategic and timely.

Other members of the committee include respected sports journalist Colin Udoh, retired sprint star Olusoji Fasuba, former athlete Marilyn Okoro, table tennis legend Olufunke Oshonaike, and former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana.

Also appointed are former Nigeria international goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, UK-based sports development advocate Ahmed Muhammed, taekwondo athlete Jordan JoelMr. Oyilei Orode, UK-based journalist Ayodele Ibidapo, and Clement Nwakpa, who will serve as the committee’s Media Officer.

The leadership structure of the committee is further strengthened with the appointment of Abigail Marshall Katung as First Vice ChairmanDavid Omigie as Second Vice Chairman, and former D’Tigress captain Sarah Ogoke as Third Vice Chairman.

“The committee represents a global blend of experience, influence, and commitment aimed at boosting Nigeria’s international sporting competitiveness.”

The formation of the committee comes at a time when many countries are increasing efforts to connect with athletes in the diaspora, recognizing the depth of talent available beyond domestic borders. For Nigeria, the initiative may prove crucial in building a stronger and more competitive future across multiple sporting disciplines.

With the appointment of professionals such as Adewale Ajayi, the NSC appears to be making a clear statement that the future of Nigerian sports will not only be built on the home front, but also through the strength and contribution of Nigerians making impact around the world.
