Dr. Kome S Oseghale, the Nigerian Canadian doctor, successfully practicing in the US enjoys putting smiles on people’s faces. Kome who is celebrating 50 this week, particularly desires to see children smile and stay happy.
Kome Oseghale, MD practices pediatrics at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, NY. She is a board certified Paediatrician and also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Kome Oseghale, recently began the practice of applying fluoride varnish to the teeth of some of her youngest patients. Working with the American Academy of Pediatrics and St. Lawrence County Public Health, Dr. Oseghale has been able to apply the fluoride varnish to 100 kids from age 0-5y/o since the program started in December 2020.
Dr. Oseghale chose this project she named 123 Smile to implement into her practice after attending an AAP conference where pediatric oral health was discussed.
Kome said, “the evident need for better oral health in our pediatric population is high, especially in our younger, Medicaid population. Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic disease among children. Almost half of all children will experience tooth decay by the time they reach kindergarten. That is not acceptable, and I have chosen to address this disparity within my practice through the 123 Smile program.”
Dr. Oseghale and her team have trained other medical providers in the Claxton-Hepburn medical hospital health centers and the goal is to incorporate Fluoride vanish into well-child visits in all the children of St.Lawrence County New York. “This way we can prevent the prevalence of early childhood caries in kids living in rural America with limited access to Pediatric Dentists and other medical/ dental subspecialties,”Dr. Oseghale said.
Going back to the roots.
Kome who graduated from the University of Lagos, immigrated to Canada from Nigeria, the most populous black nation in the world and 7th largest producer of oil. But 83 million of its nearly 200 million population live in poverty.
Kome is mindful of the grim statistics and actively but quietly champions several projects to support people and communities suffering from poverty.
It was David McKay who said that “true happiness comes only by making others happy.” Golden jubilee girl Dr. Kome Oseghale knows that only too well.
